Teen Canteen Reunion
Posted Monday, August 24, 2009 04:32 PM

Took a break from elder care and dog wrangling, grabbed Debby Darlin' and dropped in on the Teen Canteen Reunion billed as "Samstock" at the Floores Country Store in Helotes TX.  Was disquietng to see so many old folks with canes, multi-colored hearing aids, grey hair, and big bellies...drifting around in tie dye and such.  It looked like a hippie branch of Autumn Winds Nursing home had bused in residents for a senior activity.  Then I went into the grungy men's room, looked in the mirror, and was slapped back into reality....this is 2009 bub...not 1965...deal with it.  Was a trip to see the Teen Canteen Guru, Sam Kinsey, still above ground and quietly reveling in this concert given in his name. (My teen memories of Sam center around the haggling between Sam and Tony Degges every time Courtney, Tony and I  entered the Canteen...something about smelling our breath).  Although I longed to see Bill Ash's "Stoics", Terry Laughlin's  "Invaders" or Jeff Schrieber's band stand and deliver, I had to be satisfied with a geriatric set by The Chayns....which was in fact pretty cool and had all the chicks gyrating and squealing once again.  The other bands I could not recall from yesteryear....too much water over the dam here.  Ran into Chester Slimp who will probably provide his own rememberance...but did not recognize another soul except my wife Debby and Bruce Hathaway (former KTSA Jock).  All in all it was a tune-up for the Mac Reunion and yet another wake-up call on Father Time's relentless march.

Canteen Fest 2010 - Band Reunion....MUSIC!

Once again this is a band reunion bringing together the musical acts we knew and loved for one night of great classic music and in the spirit of brotherhood of reuniting with old friends. If you are old enough to remember those times then this event is tailored to you and would do not want to miss out on the fun and the memories. The name of the event has changed from SamStock 2009 to Canteen Fest 2010 for this years reunion blowout.

The date is Sunday Sept 5th at Floore's Country Store in Helotes, Texas. Labor Day weekend. Reunion hours are 3 to 11:00 pm. The bands go from 4:00 pm till 10:30. Admission price is $15 a person. Actual band members and players get in free but we ask that spouses and other general guests pay the cover charge at the door. No advance tickets required.
Great food and drinks will be available as the cafe restaurant will remain open till 10 pm and the bar till closing. All ages are welcome to the event.

General info and notices:
The list of players and bands who have expressed interest in playing the show has been outstanding. Some of the actual bands at the event will be a mix combination of new groupings consisting of former members from all the big name bands of the Teen Canteen era.
The Roster is jam packed with up to 15 bands. There are some 100 performers involved. This includes musicians, committee members, DJ's and MC's, and 4 or more sound and stage crew personal. It's a big show. It is also one of the largest gathering of players and old friends in one place at one time you will find this summer.
General instructions and info for the bands and members.
I wish to extend my thanks to all the players who expressed interest in playing the event. My heartfelt apologies to all those that were unable to be in the show.
Music should be of the era and the sets will be around 20 minutes or 4 to 5 songs each band. We ask that all bands contain other Canteen era players for your band mates. If you need help finding a player for a missing member write me and I can hook you up. We are making every attempt to get as many ex-canteen musicians a chance to play even if for only one song.
A back line of equipment will be provided for your use. This includes amps, drum kits, and keyboards.
Several DJ's and TV personalities will be present as MC's to the event introducing the bands as they take the stage.
